Emmanuel Macron has categorized a deadly shooting in the Paris suburbs as a racist terrorist attack, marking a new phase in French national security.

The violence unfolded on Friday afternoon in Trappes and the neighboring town of La Verrière. For approximately 15 minutes, a gunman drove a grey Renault Clio through several neighborhoods, firing from the vehicle. He targeted individuals in a petrol station, a medical center, and a playground in Trappes before moving to La Verrière, where police stopped him on a main road. One person died, and five others were wounded, including a 12-year-old girl who suffered eight gunshot wounds and required surgery. Three victims remain in serious condition.

Macron visited the scene and stated that the victims were selected based on skin color or religion. He described the event as a turning point for the Republic, claiming it was the first instance of a random racial killing of this type in France. The National Anti-Terrorist Prosecutor's Office (PNAT) opened an investigation for murder in connection with a terrorist enterprise. Charges also cover possession of a Category A weapon, a classification that includes military-grade arms and burst-fire weapons, and conspiracy with a terrorist group.

French media identified the suspect as Kevin T, a 39-year-old man with four previous convictions that had been automatically expunged. The PNAT noted he was known to police but not to intelligence services and was not on a list of serious security threats. A member of his immediate family was also detained on Friday. A local police chief told BFMTV that the suspect used an older-style semi-automatic weapon, while Le Parisien reported the firearm dated back to World War Two.

Ali Rabeh, the mayor of Trappes, said the gunman fired randomly with the aim of causing as many casualties as possible. He added that the attacker wanted to cause carnage. The mother of the injured 12-year-old, who was wearing a headscarf, told RTL that her daughter was born in Trappes and has the right to live in France. She asked how anyone could do this to a child, wondering if her headscarf was the reason for the attack.

Macron urged the public not to give an inch against ideologies taking root. The precise motive remains under investigation. The prosecutor's office confirmed the case is being treated as a terrorist enterprise. The suspect is currently in custody. The 12-year-old girl is undergoing surgery. Three other wounded individuals remain in serious condition. The grey Renault Clio used in the attack was recovered. The weapon is a semi-automatic firearm from World War Two. The suspect had four expunged convictions. A family member was also taken into custody.
