Apple TV subscribers in the United States can now watch Formula 1 with Dolby Atmos audio, and the first race to get the treatment is this weekend's United States Grand Prix. The upgrade began on Friday, October 23.

Apple and Dolby Laboratories announced the change earlier this month, saying Formula 1 coverage on Apple TV would gain Dolby Atmos support starting with the Grand Prix weekend. The United States Grand Prix is the first Formula 1 race ever broadcast in the format.

Apple says the surround sound is meant to put viewers in the middle of race weekend, covering everything from team radio and commentary to roaring engines, on-track battles and the intensity of the pit lane. It adds that pairing Dolby Atmos with Dolby Vision's rich colors and lifelike clarity delivers exceptional sound and spectacular visuals that put fans at the heart of the action.

First practice has already finished, but subscribers can still catch the remaining sessions. Practice 2 is set for Friday, October 23, at 5 p.m. ET. On Saturday, October 24, Practice 3 starts at 1:30 p.m. ET, followed by qualifying at 5 p.m. ET. The race itself takes place on Sunday, October 25, at 4 p.m. ET.

To mark the event, Apple will host a live screening of Sunday's race at its Domain NORTHSIDE store in Austin, Texas. The same store welcomed Apple CEO John Ternus and retail chief Deirdre O'Brien on Friday for the launch of the iPhone Duo.

Apple has also prepared for the race weekend in Apple Maps. The company recently expanded its Detailed City Experience to Austin and added a detailed map of the Circuit of The Americas. It includes turn numbers, grandstands, 3D landmarks and other information to help fans find their way around the venue.

Apple TV costs $14.99 per month, or it can be had as part of the Apple One bundle. The service also carries hit shows and movies such as Ted Lasso, Severance, The Studio, The Morning Show, Shrinking and Silo.
