Jordan’s security posture has shifted following a violent incident that targeted a place of worship. The change in defensive strategy adds new operational costs to the country's public safety budget.

Gunmen killed nine people and wounded 40 others during a funeral at St George's Greek Orthodox church in Hamoud, Karak governorate, on Friday. The health minister confirmed the injury count, while Maj gen Abdallah al-Maaytah, head of the Public Security Directorate, stated that most victims were receiving medical care. The search for the attackers is ongoing.

Interior minister Mazin Al Farrayeh identified the perpetrators as extremists. He noted that it was too early to determine if they had ties to specific groups inside or outside Jordan. No organization has claimed responsibility for the shooting. Footage verified by Reuters showed three individuals firing from a pavement near the church before running toward the entrance.

Prime minister Jafar Hassan described the event as a result of terrorist ideology on social media. He stated that the government would not allow society to follow that path. King Abdullah visited the region within hours of the attack. He promised that the perpetrators would be punished with an iron fist and claimed that unity would defeat those trying to divide the nation with bullets.

The US embassy in Amman announced on Saturday that security has been stepped up at malls, foreign embassies, and other locations. This expansion of protective measures requires additional resources for surveillance and personnel deployment. Security forces were deployed at the church site, where blood was visible on the floor near the entrance in footage taken after the incident.

International leaders have reacted to the violence. UN secretary general António Guterres condemned the attack on civilians and a place of worship. Mike Waltz, the US ambassador to the UN, called the event a depraved and brutal attack. Jordan remains a key US partner in the region, having been hit by Iranian attacks this year after strikes against Iran in February.

Christians constitute a minority in Jordan, a country that hosts several biblical sites attracting pilgrims. US authorities have reported foiling multiple attempted attacks by Islamist militants in recent years. The stability of the region is a key factor for regional business operations and trade routes.

Outside a government hospital in Karak, Hani Al-Mbaydeen expressed shock at the event. He urged the state to investigate the origins of the dark ideas that led to the attack and how they enter the minds of young people. The gathering of supporters and medical staff highlighted the immediate human cost of the incident.
