Ukraine and Russia have agreed to pause military operations in Oleshky, a Russian-occupied city in southern Ukraine. The first lady’s office announced the arrangement on Friday, citing humanitarian needs as the primary driver. The localized ceasefire is scheduled to take effect on Thursday, October 29.

The office attributed the deal directly to Melania Trump, acting in her formal role as Exclusive Intermediary. Her team stated that she worked directly with leadership from both nations to define the terms of the truce. This includes aligning the parties on objectives, technical procedures, timing, and processes. The agreement halts all military action within the city to facilitate the entry of aid and the preparation of a civilian evacuation route.

Mrs. Trump described the conditions in Oleshky as severe, noting that the remaining population consists mostly of elderly residents. She stated that these individuals urgently require medical attention, medicine, food, and clean water. She also pointed out that residents have limited electricity, live amid mined roads, and endure regular military attacks. In her view, the intervention made it possible to bring in aid and evacuate the elderly, a task she said would have been impossible otherwise.

Under the plan, non-military civilian leaders from both countries will visit residents in their homes to assess their needs. Those wishing to leave will receive coordinated support and transportation to their chosen destination. Mrs. Trump noted that some residents may choose to go to Russia, while others may prefer Ukraine. She also arranged for an American media organization to document the efforts of both teams. Newsmax, a conservative outlet, confirmed it would participate in the coverage.

White House communications director Steven Cheung called the development amazing news on X. He described it as a major, positive step towards peace and said history would remember the first lady’s tireless work. Ukrainian officials indicated that a tentative agreement has been reached for the occupied territory, though neither country has issued a detailed public comment on the announcement.

The move follows a recent call between Pope Leo and Russian President Vladimir Putin, during which the pope expressed concern about the humanitarian situation in Oleshky. Mrs. Trump has also worked to reunite 34 children with their families after they were forcibly removed by Russia. The announcement comes as President Trump’s broader efforts to end the war have stalled. He recently expressed frustration with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy, stating that Russia has been fine on Ukraine and has not been doing much.

Next steps involve the joint assessment of resident needs and the coordination of evacuation logistics. The designated safe passageway will be used for civilian movement once the truce begins on October 29. The media organization will begin documenting the work of the Russian and Ukrainian teams immediately after the ceasefire takes effect.
