Elena Rybakina secured her spot in the Ningbo Open final by defeating Diana Shnaider 6-3, 7-5. The 27-year-old Australian Open and US Open champion, who currently holds the world number one ranking, will now attempt to claim the title for a second consecutive year. Her performance in the semifinal at the Yinzhou International Tennis Centre demonstrated her ability to overcome technical challenges against a left-handed opponent.
Rybakina arrived in the eastern Chinese city after a turbulent run of matches. She suffered a heavy loss in Beijing and subsequently withdrew from the Wuhan tournament due to a foot injury. Despite these setbacks, she displayed flashes of her best tennis against the sixth seed. Shnaider, ranked 13th in the world, forced the world number one to fight for both sets, creating long rallies that tested Rybakina's consistency.
The match featured a recurring struggle for Rybakina to close out games. In the opening set, she took control with powerful winners from deep in the court but failed to convert multiple set points. She finally sealed the first set on her 11th set point. Rybakina noted the difficulty of the contest, stating, "It was an important game, and it was a long one.. so many opportunities, but I'm glad it went my way."
The second set mirrored the first. Rybakina struggled with first-serve accuracy but managed to break Shnaider's serve to lead 4-3. Shnaider responded by breaking the world number one for love in the 10th game. Rybakina answered with aggressive hitting to re-break and regain the lead. She then served with increased confidence to finish the match, avoiding a third set.
The left-handed nature of Shnaider's game presented a specific tactical hurdle. Rybakina explained that switching patterns during rallies was a challenge. "She played really well, and it's always difficult to play against left-handers," she said. "I needed some time.. but I'm happy I managed to win in two sets." This dynamic will likely repeat in the final, as her opponent, Leylah Fernandez, is also a left-hander.
Fernandez earned her place in the final by defeating Marie Bouzkova 6-3, 7-5. The unseeded Canadian player will face Rybakina on Sunday. After the Ningbo Open, Rybakina is scheduled to compete in the Pan Pacific Open in Tokyo next week. She will then begin her defense of the WTA Finals title at Indian Wells on November 8.
Rybakina approached the prospect of winning back-to-back trophies with a pragmatic outlook. She acknowledged the difficulty of the task while expressing her intent to compete at her highest level. "It's never easy," she said. "Of course I'll try to do my best. I'm going to fight and give my all tomorrow."
