Arsenal and Manchester City now share the top spot in the Premier League after a chaotic round of matches. Arsenal secured a 2-0 win over Everton in heavy rain, while Manchester City suffered their first defeat of the season at Aston Villa.
The title leaders lost 2-1 at Villa Park on Saturday. Nicolas Jackson scored two goals for the home side, ending the visitors' unbeaten start. That result erased the three-point gap between the clubs. Both teams now have 21 points from eight games.
Arsenal took an early lead at the Emirates Stadium. In the seventh minute, Martin Odegaard's corner led to a scramble in the box. Ezri Konsa bundled the ball in from close range. It was Arsenal's first set-piece goal in 13 games. Ben White and Gabriel added the second in the 68th minute, with Gabriel heading in White's cross.
At Aston Villa, Unai Emery's side climbed to sixth place on 11 points. Jackson put Villa ahead in the sixth minute after a mistake by Marc Guehi. Erling Haaland equalized with a header from a free kick. Jackson restored the lead in the 60th minute, finishing a cutback from Ibrahim Mbaye.
Manchester City faces an off-field battle as well. An independent commission found the club committed 114 breaches of financial rules. The club is currently appealing that decision. "It's just the beginning; we're trying to work game by game," Jackson told TNT Sports.
Other results tightened the middle of the table. Tottenham Hotspur beat Chelsea 2-0 at Stamford Bridge. It was their second league win there in 36 years. Mathys Tel scored the winner in the 87th minute. Cole Palmer was sent off in the 80th minute.
Fulham defeated Coventry City 1-0. Oscar Bobb scored in the 80th minute with a curled shot into the far corner. Fulham sits in 13th place, while Coventry is 19th.
