The Charles closes after 6 years in Old Wethersfield
Owner Bryce D. Hardy cited a failed 2024 venture, historic building constraints, and personal family losses as the reasons for the permanent shutdown.

Six years after opening during the pandemic, The Charles restaurant in Wethersfield, Connecticut, permanently closed its doors on Monday, Nov. 2. The establishment at 161 Main St. finished its final dinner service on that day, ending a run that began in 2020.
Owner Bryce D. Hardy announced the decision through a Facebook post. He identified three main factors behind the closure: financial setbacks, the physical limitations of the historic building, and personal hardships. Hardy described the restaurant as a gathering place for neighbors and families that served contemporary American cuisine, including steak frites, Berkshire pork chops, and house-made pasta.
The historic nature of the building created operational hurdles that Hardy said became increasingly difficult to manage. He pointed to limited kitchen capacity, accessibility issues, and restrictions on expanding the space. Hardy wrote that these were real obstacles to building a sustainable business, despite the team's efforts to work around them for six years.
A separate business venture also contributed to the financial strain. Hardy opened BAKE Market, a French-style bakery, in Glastonbury in 2024. That business eventually closed, and Hardy stated that the setback prevented The Charles from fully recovering. He noted that the failure of the bakery compounded the challenges already present at the restaurant.
Hardy also shared the emotional impact of losing both of his parents within the last 12 months. Both parents died after battles with dementia. He described the year as one of the hardest of his life, noting the difficulty of managing the restaurant while navigating those losses. Hardy said the experience reinforced the priority of family relationships over business operations.
The restaurant is now handling the logistics of its shutdown. All upcoming dining reservations have been canceled. Customers with unused gift cards or scheduled private events should email hello@thecharlesct.com with their details. The team is reviewing existing private event arrangements individually and will provide more information about outstanding gift cards as it becomes available. No plans for a reopening at another location have been announced.
Hardy expressed pride in what the restaurant accomplished during its short life. He thanked the employees, customers, and his family for their support. The Hardy family concluded their farewell message by thanking Old Wethersfield residents for allowing the business to be part of their celebrations and traditions. Hardy added that his passion for hospitality is not over and that he hopes to continue creating places that bring people together in the future.
