Latvian authorities have recovered the remains of an unmanned aerial vehicle that entered the country's airspace. The Latvian National Armed Forces announced on Saturday that the wreckage was found in the Alūksne district. The military stated the drone likely crossed the border on 18 October.
The discovery concludes a search that began after residents reported a noise similar to an explosion. The National Armed Forces and the State Police initially scouted the area but halted the operation after two days. Officials determined the available information was insufficient to identify the source of the noise at that time.
Military officials confirmed that no civilians were injured during the incident. They reported that no civilian infrastructure sustained damage and identified no further threats to the region. An internal review is currently underway to assess how the event unfolded and the specific factors involved.
This event follows a similar breach in neighboring Lithuania. On 18 October, debris from a suspected drone was located in the village of Juodžionys in the Pasvalys district. Lithuanian officials stated the aircraft entered the country from Poland. Prime Minister Mindaugas Sinkevičius said the drone contained explosives.
Heorhii Tykhyi, spokesman for Ukraine's Ministry of Foreign Affairs, attributed the Lithuanian incident to Russian electronic warfare measures. He added that Ukraine expressed regret over the event. The Latvian investigation continues as officials analyze the recovered debris.
