Mbappe targets Ballon d'Or with 22 World Cup goals
Real Madrid star cites individual scoring records to challenge rivals with multiple trophies ahead of Monday's award ceremony in London.

Kylian Mbappe enters the Ballon d'Or race as an underdog, relying on record-setting performance rather than team success to win soccer's premier individual honor. The award ceremony will take place on Monday in London.
The 2025-26 campaign concluded without a major trophy for Mbappe at either club or international level. Real Madrid finished second in La Liga and were eliminated by Bayern Munich in the Champions League quarterfinals. France placed fourth at the 2026 World Cup in North America, losing to Spain in the semifinals and England in the third-place playoff.
Mbappe points to his scoring output as the primary justification for his bid. He became the all-time leading scorer in World Cup history with 22 goals in 22 matches, surpassing Lionel Messi, who has 21, and Miroslav Klose, who has 16. He also won the Golden Boot for the second consecutive tournament. "Being the all-time top scorer in World Cup history, overtaking all the great legends in the history of the sport in the most important tournament there is, is something that really stands out," Mbappe said last month.
His club statistics support his case. The former Paris Saint-Germain forward scored 25 goals to lead La Liga and added 15 goals in the Champions League, where he also topped the scoring charts. "I was top scorer in all the biggest competitions, and I think that this could be a good year for me, and I really feel it," he stated. When asked who he was voting for, he replied, "Myself."
Competitors have stronger trophy cabinets. Lamine Yamal won the World Cup with Spain and the league title with Barcelona. Harry Kane of Bayern Munich secured three trophies last term, including the Bundesliga. Despite this, Real Madrid manager Jose Mourinho backed his player. "We know who has made history this summer, and he's not from PSG or the Spanish national team," Mourinho said.
Historical trends suggest individual brilliance rarely outweighs team success. Every Ballon d'Or winner over the past decade lifted at least one trophy in the award year. Ousmane Dembele won in 2025 after helping PSG to their first Champions League title, while Rodri won Euro 2024 and the Premier League with Manchester City in his victory year.
There is one precedent for a trophyless winner. Cristiano Ronaldo of Real Madrid won the award in 2013 after Real finished as league runners-up and Portugal failed to advance past the 2012 World Cup playoffs. Ronaldo had scored 66 goals that season. Mbappe, who received a third-place finish in 2023, now has nine nominations and is aiming to break the modern pattern.
