Patrick Stewart has died at the age of 86.

The British actor, best known for portraying Captain Jean-Luc Picard in the science fiction franchise, passed away at his home in Los Angeles on Wednesday night. His spokesperson, Kelly Bush Novak, confirmed the news. A statement posted to Stewart's social media accounts described his final period as a short and poignant journey with Alzheimer’s Disease and Lewy Body Dementia. The family noted that they would cherish the peaceful ease on his face as a reminder of his grace.

Stewart’s career spanned more than six decades, beginning in the northern English town of Mirfield where he was born in 1940. His parents were a textile worker and a soldier. He started performing in local youth theater groups as a child. Before finding his footing on stage, he worked briefly as a journalist and a furniture salesman. He joined the Royal Shakespeare Company in 1966 and remained with the troupe until 1982. During that time, he performed leading roles in classic plays such as A Midsummer Night’s Dream, The Merchant of Venice, and The Winter’s Tale. This period established his reputation as a highly respected Shakespearean actor.

Global fame arrived when he took the role of Captain Picard in Star Trek: The Next Generation. The series aired from 1987 to 1994 and followed the crew of the Starship Enterprise. The character became a cultural touchstone, leading to several spin-off movies. Stewart returned to the role in the Star Trek: Picard television series, which ran from 2020 to 2023. In a 2022 interview with The Guardian, he recalled that he initially refused invitations to fan conventions during the first season of the original series. He eventually agreed to attend several each year, a practice that continued for decades.

In 2010, Queen Elizabeth II knighted Stewart for his services to drama. He accepted the title of Sir Patrick Stewart, calling it the grandest professional honor of his life. The actor’s death marks the end of an era for British stage and global screen audiences. His family has shared their gratitude for the support received during his final days.

The announcement comes just as fans around the world prepare to honor his contributions to the arts. Stewart’s body of work includes numerous stage productions and films beyond the Star Trek franchise. His legacy continues through the performances that defined his career. The industry awaits further details regarding the arrangement of services and memorials for the late actor.
