The US Embassy in Moscow issued a security alert on Saturday, warning of a credible threat of a mass casualty event at the Tsaritsyno Museum Reserve. Russian authorities acted on that warning to detain a minor who was allegedly planning an attack on the site, according to a statement from the Federal Security Service on Sunday.
The FSB stated that US law enforcement provided information that led directly to the arrest of the Russian citizen. The agency described the suspect as a teenager who subscribed to a neo-Nazi channel on Telegram and conducted numerous searches regarding past terrorist acts and mass murders. Airsoft weapons were recovered from the suspect's home.
The teenager was identified after posting images on TikTok wearing tactical clothing and an object resembling an automatic weapon. He also shared photos taken at the Tsaritsyno Museum Reserve with the caption, "I found a place." The FSB expressed gratitude to the US side for the intelligence provided, marking a moment of cooperation between the two security services.
The museum was not initially aware of the warning when contacted by CNN, but events scheduled for the venue were subsequently canceled and security measures were increased. The US government said it was coordinating with appropriate Russian authorities on a response to the threat.
This exchange occurs against a backdrop of shifting diplomatic dynamics. In March 2024, US officials warned of imminent plans by ISIS militants to target large gatherings in Moscow. President Vladimir Putin dismissed that warning as a provocation, although more than 140 people were killed in the Crocus City Hall attack days later. In 2017, Putin thanked then-President Donald Trump for a warning about a planned attack in St. Petersburg, which led to the detention of suspects at the Kazan Cathedral.
The current cooperation has drawn attention within the US political sphere. President Trump has made recent concessions to Russia regarding sanctions, a move that has sparked criticism from both parties in Washington and created tension between the US and its Western allies.
