A 36-year-old British woman died on Tuesday after a strong current swept her away during a family snorkeling trip in North Bimini. The Royal Bahamas police force opened an investigation into the incident, which took place near the southern point of the island.

Police report that the woman was in the water with her husband and two sons when the current carried both boys away. As she attempted to reach them, she was also pulled under. The boys were later rescued from the water safely.

Officers at the Alice Town police station received a report shortly after 10:00 a.m. that a woman was unresponsive at the North Bimini ferry dock. By the time they arrived, she had already been transported to the local clinic for medical attention.

A doctor at the clinic pronounced her dead despite efforts to revive her. Police noted that she was pulled from the water and brought to the dock, where CPR was administered. The force stated that foul play is not suspected at this time.

An autopsy is scheduled to determine the exact cause of death. The Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Office confirmed it is aware of the case. A spokesperson said, "Our thoughts are with the family of a British woman who has died in the Bahamas." Officials are currently in contact with local authorities to provide support to the family.

Bimini is a small island group located between Andros and Miami. It serves as the closest point in the Bahamas to the US mainland. The islands are also known for hosting a shark research centre.
