A 36-year-old British woman from Stapleford in Nottinghamshire has died in the Bahamas after attempting to save her two sons from a dangerous ocean current.

The Royal Bahamas Police Force announced that an investigation into the sudden death began on Tuesday on the island of Bimini.

Police report that the woman was snorkeling with her husband and their two sons near the southern point of the island when a strong current separated the children from the group.

The woman swam toward the boys and was also pulled away by the water. The two sons were later recovered from the sea.

Officers at the Alice Town police station received a call shortly after 10:00 a.m. reporting an unresponsive woman at the North Bimini Ferry Dock.

Responding officers found that the woman had already been transported to a local clinic for medical care. A doctor pronounced her dead at the facility despite resuscitation efforts.

Police stated that the woman was pulled from the water and taken to the ferry dock, where CPR was administered. The force said foul play is not currently suspected.

An autopsy is scheduled to determine the precise cause of death. A Foreign Office spokesperson said officials are coordinating with local authorities to support the family.
