Raleigh police took 14 people into custody on Glenwood Avenue between Saturday night and Sunday morning, according to arrest records released on Sunday. The detentions occurred during a period when thousands of people gathered in the district for Halloween celebrations.
The charges filed in the past 48 hours range from simple affray and resisting a public officer to being intoxicated and disruptive. Seven individuals faced charges of simple affray. Court records describe incidents where people struck one another with their fists and hands in the middle of the street. At least a dozen additional gun-related charges were filed in the downtown area between Friday and Saturday.
Raleigh police planned for the high volume of foot traffic by staffing at least 100 extra patrol officers for the weekend. Officers used social media to warn the public about driving while impaired and to expect large crowds in Glenwood South. They also reminded residents to use crosswalks.
This increase in arrests follows a similar pattern from months earlier. Dozens of people were taken into custody in connection with violence in the Glenwood South and Brier Creek areas during the Fourth of July weekend. The recent Glenwood Avenue arrests mark another instance of significant law enforcement activity in the district during a major holiday.
